Alkis Zopoglou has been enchanted by music from a very early age, playing percussion, and later clarinet. Too soon, he meets kanun and is performing passionately ever since. For eight years he systematically takes lessons in Istanbul. There, he studies and meets the styles of performance of various importan kanun players of Istanbul, such as Ahmet Meter, Halil Karaduman, Goksel Kartal and Goksel Baktagir.
He is a licensee in Byzantine music since 1996 and very soon he proves himself as one of the most important Greek virtuosos developing an intense artistic activity. He takes part in several cultural events and in discography, with almost all the prominent composers inside and outside Greece (Chronis Aidonidis, Nikos Saragoudas, Stamatis Kraounakis, Haig Yazdjian, Nikos Filippidis, Theo Kapilidis, En Chordais, Theodossi Spassov, Sellahadin Maraqa, Ara Digjian, Kudsi Erguner, Suleiman Erguner, Imane Homsy, Charbel Rouhana, Samir Siblini, Fahrettin Yarkin, Necip Gulses, Hossein Omouni, Kiya and Ziya Tabassian, Ghada Shbeir, Rima Khcheich and others). His creative anxiety is channeled into the music ensemble “Kontrabando” of which he is a founding member: an interesting artistic proposal for modern reading of traditional music, a combination of the kanun with Western European instruments such as the piano, the double bass and the production of new compositions.
As a composer, Alkis Zopoglou balances tradition and modernity and his works have captivated thousands of listeners in important concert venues and festivals around the world. He has travelled for concerts as a solo-musician as well as a member of “En Chordais” or other music ensembles in many foreign countries (Germany, France, USA, Canada, Russia, Tunisia, Australia, Tasmania, Kazakhstan, China, Netherlands, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Kuwait, Hong Kong, Oman, Romania, Ukraine and others). Furthermore he has represented Greece as a musician and has taught kanun in international kanun meetings in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon Cyprus and Romania.
He has been active as a composer as well and has produced two personal albums. Many of his compositions have been distributed worldwide. Since 2013 he is founder and artistic director of mediterranean music festival in Zurich where he lives in recent years.
